I give up on the writing…
I make bentos. I take pictures of bentos. I can’t seem to post bentos. Having to write about them discourages me. So I’m moving to flickr. You can see my bentos here:

Piggies!
Today I had a really good bento. I got some sweet red bean buns at the Asian market this week. They are really tasty, but I think I need to do a shorter run in the microwave for tomorrow’s. I also had a few strawberries left to put in. I was decorating bear-shaped rice with umeboshi noses and sesame seed eyes, but it turned out looking like pigs. Oh well, it made cute piggies!

Not lunch…
but it was sooooo good I had to share! It also explains why there won’t be very many strawberries in my bento

My dinner:

Homemade waffles with fresh strawberries. Yum!

Fresh start :o)
Ok, in all the wedding craziness the bentos went by the way side. I have all the stuff to start again this week!
Here is my most exciting contribution- freshly picked strawberries!

Two days of bento again…
I really tried to post this bento yesterday, but my computer decided not to talk to my Memory Stick. Today they’re speaking, so here it is:

In the top half I had 2 wet umeboshi, 3 shumai, sugar snap peas, and a little bottle of memmi. Memmi is a mild sauce, less salty than soy, which can be used for things ranging from cold noodle sauce to tempura dipping sauce. I put it on my shumai. The bottom half is 3 inari with furikake that came in the package with the tofu packets. It was pretty tasty!
Today’s bento was pretty much the same with 4 inari instead of 3:

Tomorrow’s bento will probably reflect that I don’t feel like making rice tonight.

Friday’s Bento
I’ve been doing well with making the bento… It’s the posting the bento that’s a problem. Here’s the one I had on Friday:

The top half has 1 shumai, 2 dry umeboshi, sugar snap peas, a miniature Cadbury creme egg, and a little bottle of soy sauce for my rice. The bottom half is just plain white rice. It was yummy.
We went grocery shopping today. For next week I have wet umeboshi, shumai, sugar snap peas, and inari pockets
I also tried out Sapporo Ichiban yakisoba flavored chow mein, which seems to be the same as the yakisoba my okaasan used to buy in Japan. I’ll have to get more to put in my bento in the future.

Two Days of Bento Pictures
I got my new bento box and goodies in the mail yesterday! Today I took a lunch full of cute little flower shaped rice with sugar snap peas as leaves, bear shaped rice, 2 shumai, and a little bottle of soy sauce for the rice and shumai. It was really good!

Bento box, utensils, rice molds, silicon cups, and sauce bottles

Bento box with fork, spoon and chopstick set in the cute little thermal tote

My cute lunch today!

Day 2 Actual Bento
There are no pictures of today’s bento. Today is the “Oh crap, I forgot to make rice!” bento. This morning I dug through my cabinets until I found something that didn’t require any prep:
I tossed a package of mushroom udon in a larger tupperware (doubles as soup bowl). That’s in the microwave in my office now.
I have attempt number 2 at microwaving shumai ready for when the udon comes out. It occured to me (much later than it should considering I’m writing my masters about microwaves…) that the directions on the package are for 15 dumplings, when I only made 3. I just took them out of the microwave and 40 seconds seems to be about right.
I also stuck 2 dry umeboshi and a Cadbury egg in my lunch box.
I’m expecting my bento box to come tomorrow. According to UPS it is now somewhere in this city.
Side note: I don’t think I like mushroom udon as much as shrimp.
Happy lunch

First Actual Bento Post
I still haven’t been grocery shopping and my bento box doesn’t arrive until Wednesday, but I also ran out of frozen food, so I made a bento for lunch tomorrow.
As you can see, the shumai didn’t really microwave well. Neither did the container I microwaved them in. I decided steaming them would probably work better, but I don’t actually have a steamer. Fortunately, my pot and cooling rack combo seems to have worked MUCH better. The last picture shows the comparison between the microwaved and steamed shumai. Jason ate one of the microwaved shumai and followed it up with straight raspberry flavored honey- apparently it was really bad!
Next on my to-do list: Figure out how to put photos in wordpress better.

Does Star Trek count?
I still don’t really have much bento news as I haven’t been grocery shopping. My garden is sprouting nicely and I’m looking forward to strawberries, peas, zucchini, yellow squash, green onions, and butternut squash for future bento
)
In other news, I took this ridiculous Star Trek quiz which was surprisingly reasonable considering the REALLY dumb questions.
Your results:
You are Beverly Crusher
